IMPHAL, Sept 25: A rifleman of the 5th Manipur Rifles posted at Tamenglong succumbed to injuries inflicted by a group of people following an ugly altercation between them in a vendor at Wangoi Kabui village under Wangoi Police station late last night.
According to a reliable source, the rifleman identified as Thounaojam Herojit Singh, 27, s/o late Th Rajen Singh of Wangoi Longjam Leikai, later succumbed to his injuries at RIMS hospital later in the night.
Further according to the source, the incident happen last night at around 7pm when a group of locals came into a vendor where Herojit was sitting alone drinking liquor and a heated altercation erupted between the five and Herojit after sometime.
The source identified the local youths have beenidentified as as Wairokpam Prasanta, 22, s/o W Pishak, Wahengbam Torbin, s/o late Roben, Wahengbam Boinao, s/o of Jane, Wahengbam Rosni, s/o W Roso all residence of Wangoi Wahengam Leikai and P Bobo, s/o of P Mani of Wangoi Longjam Leikai
The source also alleged that the five first beat up Herojit inside the vendor and later took him out of there and attacked him on his head and abdomen with a knife.
The five further took Herojit to the CHC, Wangoi, from where he was referred to the RIMS in a critical condition. Herojit later succumbed to his injuries at RIMS at around 11:35 pm, alleged the source.
Meanwhile, angered by the news of the death, irate public of Wangoi Longjam Leikai burned down the house of one of the accused Wirokpam Prasanta and further dismantled the house belonging to Wahengbam Torbin in the wee hours today.
On the other hand, in connection with the killing a public meeting was organized at Wangoi bazaar today and formed a JAC in connection with the killing. Further the newly formed JAC has decided to take stern agitations if the accused persons are not produced and handed over to the police by 1 pm this afternoon.
It also demanded that, a job for the next of kin of the deceased, and incase of failure on the part of the authorities concerned to fulfil the demands of the JAC, they will take up stern steps in the nearest future, stated a spokesman of the JAC.
Meanwhile, a late report has stated that all the accused persons have surrendered to the Wangoi police station afternoon.
