NE States to have better road connectivity

SHILLONG, Sept 12 (NNN): The Jorabat-Barapani stretch NH 40 in Meghalaya under the SARDP-NE programme is 10% complete while DPR is under preparation for the Barapani-Shillong stretch at a cost of Rs.536 crores and Rs.180 crores respectively. Sources said the request for proposal is to be invited for the Kohima-Dimapur stretch of NH 39 in Nagaland at a cost of Rs. 1098 crores under SARDP-NE programme. The Daboka-Nagaon-Jorabat stretch 4-laning in NH 36 & 37 in Assam has been completed on 112 km under the East-West Corridor under NHDP at a cost of Rs. 1192 crores by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Govt. of India, the sources added.

The Asian Highways 1 and 2 passes through the NE states from the Indo-Myanmar border at Moreh in Manipur via Imphal-Kohima-Dimapur-Nagaon-Jorabat-Shillong-Dawki-Tamabil stretches upto the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya on a length of 740 kms. The expected date of completion of East-West Corridor and SARDP-NE stretches are December 2012 and March 2015 respectively.

India signed the Inter-Governmental Agreement on Asian Highway Network during the 60th Annual Session of the UN Economical and Social Commission for Asian and Pacific (UNESCAP) in 2004, for coordinated development of the highway routes falling on the Asian Highway Network to a minimum acceptable standard to develop tourism, trade, transport and commerce, the sources further stated.
