New legislation needed to curb anti-people agitations: Gaikhangam

IMPHAL, September 24: Terming the economic blockade as an anti-people agitation, MPCC president Gaikhangam has expressed the need for an effective legislation to tackle the issue of frequent economic blockade on the national highways.

Gaikhangam stated this during a one-day convention state convention of Kishan Khet Mazdoor Congress Manipur held today at GM Hall, Imphal.

The MPCC president further stated that internal disturbances have hindered the implementation of various centrally sponsored programmes in the state. Various forms of agitations imposed by organizations in both hill and valley regions are not good signs for the development of the state, he averred.

Gaikhangam asserted that the blockade and counter-blockade imposed by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee and United Naga Council respectively on Sadar Hills issue must be stopped immediately in view of the sufferings of the common people.

Economic blockade may not be prevalent in other parts of the country but the state experiences blockade every now and then due to some reasons or the other, MPCC president noted.

Gaikhangam further appealed to the agitators to review their stance of indefinite blockade and adopt democratic means to demand their rights rather than harming the lives of the common people.

All issues must be settled by holding talks instead of going against the interests of the people, he enjoined.

Dwelling on the significance of the one-day state convention, Gaikhangam highlighted the role of Kishan Khet Mazdoor Congress which has been working for the cause of the farmers of the country.

Farmers and workers must be encouraged to toil more to bring more development to the state. Various schemes for enhancing agricultural sector will also be implemented soon in the state, he announced.

The convention has been organized to impart awareness and technical knowhow to the farmers of the state, Gaikhangam asserted.

General secretary of MPCC, Manga Vaiphei stressed on the need for enhancing the agricultural and allied sector to bring more development to the state.

The convention was also attended by Ramnath Pandey, convenor Kishan Khet Mazdoor Congress of Assam, Avinash Kakare, national secretary of Kishan Khet Mazdoor Congress and other members of the Mazdoor.
