Normal life affected by 60 hrs general strike in Jiribam

IMPHAL, September 27: Normal life in Jiribam sub-division of Imphal east district has been seriously affected by the imposition of 60 hours general strike by the Jiribam District Demand Committee since yesterday evening.

According to a source, several offices of the sub-divisional administration along with educational institutions and business establishment in the sub-division remain paralyzed today.

Even though there was no report of any untoward incident occurring during the general strike, the agitation created major concerned for the state government following the sudden stoppage of plying of trucks and other vehicles along the National Highway 37 (53) which is being used as the main route for transporting essential commodities into the state capital in the aftermath of the imposition of economic blockade along the National highways by the  Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee and counter blockade by the UNC since more than a month.

On the other hand, the local public and womenfolk of the Jiribam while extending their supports to the demands of the committee burned down the effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi at four different locations of the sub-division today apart from preventing movements of any form of vehicles along the main streets of the sub-division today during the general strike, the source added.

In the meantime, the entire sub-divisional head quarter of Jiribam sub-division have been put under tight security vigil since last night to prevent any forms of untoward incident during the general strike.
