Passenger service resumes on national highways

IMPHAL, Sept 7: The people of the state, especially in the hill districts breathed a sigh of relief with the resumption of inter-state and inter-district bus and taxi services along the NH-39 in full swing from today morning.

After more than a month of disruption to normal life of the people, normalcy is limping back to Sadar Hills areas after the United Naga Council (UNC) and Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) decided to suspend the general strike on the national highways, though not the economic blockade.

The SHDDC has lifted the general strike from the midnight of Wednesday allowing normal passenger service and vehicular traffic along Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam national highways.

However, the economic blockade is still in effect on these two national highways thereby obstructing vehicles carrying commercial goods.

The SHDDC has imposed the general strike from July 31 midnight to put pressure on the SPF government to create a full-fledged Sadar Hills district having three assembly constituencies out of Senapati district.

Seikhomang Haokip, spokesperson of the SHDDC said the general strike was suspended taking into consideration of the hardships faced by the public of the state.

The United Naga Council (UNC) had also imposed a total bandh along these highways and Naga inhabited areas from August 21 to register its opposition to bifurcate Naga areas. The UNC later lifted its total bandh from September 5 midnight, but continued to enforce the economic blockade.

Since the Demand committee imposed its strike, functioning of government offices and educational institutions was affected and all shops and commercial establishments along the highways passing through Sadar Hills areas remained closed. Residents of the area had to trudge on foot to other villages braving the elements.

Movement of private vehicles except for medical purposes was also not allowed to pass along the Sadar Hills during the strike.

A resident of Kangpokpi, Lalboi said that life has started coming back to normalcy.

“At least the transportation for the public has been restored. Now, shops have been opened, we can avail essential items from Imphal. And people also started going about their routine including office work,” he told IFP.
