Police to monitor unauthorised garbage dumping at roadsides and road corners

IMPHAL, September 28: The cleanliness drive jointly taken up by the Imphal East police, Imphal Municipal Council (IMC), local clubs, NGOs and general public, under the motto “Keep Imphal East district clean” since September 25, has been intensified in the district.

Continuing its drive, the district police assisted by its officers along with CRED, Workers Union and NGOs, today cleaned up littering garbage at road sides and corners at New Checkon crossing, Hatta Golapati, Minuthong and Kongba bazaar areas. 

The senior SP Imphal East district in a press release stated that the district police will soon take up stringent action under section 34 Police act 1861 and other relevant sections of law against persons who dump garbage on the road or in other unauthorized areas.

It said that to sustain the cleanliness drive, appeal was made to the general public residing in the area to become members of NGOs like CRED and Workers Union, who are engaged in collection of garbage door to door, by paying rupees 50 every month and to refrain from dumping garbage on the roads and streets.

Talking to media persons, additional SP Imphal east, Puspanjali, IPS, conveyed that under the 34 police act 1861 the police can book individual for dumping garbage at unauthorized areas or roadsides without any warrant.

She further asserted that the booked individual is liable to imprisonment for eight days with or without hard labour.

Puspanjali also maintained that the police will continue to spread awareness and encourage the households to joined CRED or Workers Union on a larger scale.

The restriction will be imposed only after the police deemed it fit to do so, she further added.

The Senior SP of Imphal east district, Clay Khongsai also personally visited the spot were the cleanliness drive was held. A huge number of police personnel were mobilized to conduct the drive.

Other police officers of the district who assisted in the cleanliness drive were additional SP (Ops), Kamei Angam Romanus IPS, SDPO, Lamlai, Meghachandra, DSP RK. Khomdon, inspector Riaz Khan, inspector John and other ranks.
