RBI cautions against false monetary offers

IMPHAL, Sept 5: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cautioned the general public of the state against fictitious offers of cheap funds in recent times from fraudsters, often in form of lottery prizes money, through letters, e-mails, SMS etc.
According to a release of RBI send through DIPR, government of Manipur, mentioned that such fraudulent communications were even sent send on fake letterheads of the RBI or other reputed organizations, purportedly signed by their top executive / senior officials.

The release further mentioned that, it has been reported to the RBI that many persons have fallen victims to such teasing and tempting offers and in the process, have lost huge sums of money.

On the other hand, fraudsters  seek money  from people, under different heads, such as, processing fees, transaction fees, tax clearance charge, conversion charges, clearing fees etc. They open multiple accounts in different banks in the name of individual or proprietary  concerns in different banks branches for receiving such payments. The amount so remitted is withdrawn immediately, leaving the victims in the lurch. Evidently, the fraudsters’ strategy is to play upon the credulity, naivete, guillibility, ignorance, greed of unsuspecting victims, the release added.

It is also mentioned that, in the light of mentioned undesirable developments, RBI advised the general public of the state to take care of the aspects including, avoidance to remit or deposit any amount in response to such fictitious offers of easy money through lottery, prizes etc, received mainly through letters, e-mail or SMS, to mote that the RBI does not maintain any account in the names of individuals, companies, trusts etc, to hold funds for disbursal and RBI would never asked people to deposit money in any account.

The public of the state are further caution that making any type of remittance towards participation in schemes of lotteries, offers from unknown entities abroad or their agents in India is illegal.

The release further mentioned that in order to avoid any inconveniences the public are requested to refer to the cautionary advices available in the matter at the RBI website, www.rbi.org.in and also urged to register a case with the local police or the cyber crime wing at the state police headquarters, the release added.
