`Recommendations from two day workshop will help to set up national poilcy on climate change`

IMPHAL, September 30: The unique two days national workshop on “Impact of Climate Change on biodiversity management in NE-India, with Particular reference to the Manipur” organized by the Manipur Biodiversity Board concluded this evening at Hotel Classic, North AOC, Imphal with the filing of the recommendations from the various experts present to help set up a national policy to fight the impact of climate change on biodiversity in the NE region .

Participation of the many experts/subject specialists from premier institutions of the country such as Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, Indian Institute Forest Management (IIFM), Bhopal, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, Foundation for Rehabilitation of local Health Tradition, Bangalore, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Manipur University and representatives of different NGOs dealing with the environment and the views shared during the two days, made the workshop all the more meaningful.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Biodiversity Board had constituted separate working groups on different topics who officially recorded the suggestions and views of the experts and delegates during the workshop. 

The working groups were constituted on various topics on Forestry, wildlife and eco-tourism,  shifting cultivation and other indigenous Agricultural practices,  wetlands and forestry and biodiversity and livelihood support.

In the meantime, the valedictory function of the two day national workshop was made eventful with the presence of BK Chaturvedhi, member, Planning Commission of India as chief guest, SN. Promo Choudhury, advisor, Planning Commission of India, Prof. HNK Sharma vice chancellor, MU, Prof. N Iboton Singh, dean Central Agricultural University, Imphal and RS Srivastav principal chief conservator of Forest, Tripura as guest of honours and presided over by VK Nautiyal IFS,  principal chief conservator of Forest, government of Meghalaya.

BK. Chaturvedhi, in his speech made his observation that the people of NE region need to continue with their sincere effort towards the conservation and preservations of the rich biodiversities and heritage in a very responsible manner.

He said holding of such national level workshop will enhance the general awareness on climate change and hope that the very workshop has come out with meaningful recommendation to fight to some extend against the climate change and will also generate a new thinking on the practical solution of climate change and its impact on biodiversities in the future to come.

VK Nautiyal said that the recommendations of the eventful two days workshop will go a long way in fighting climate change in future.

Meanwhile during the valedictory session, BK. Chaturvedhi released the People’s Biodiversity Registers for Mondum Mahadeva, L Gunphai and N Songlung areas of Manipur while SN Bromo Choudhury released documents on local health traditions of Senapati, Imphal and Ukhrul districts.

The function concluded with vote of thanks from RK Srivastava, member MBB.
