Senior Citizens of Sadar Hills call on Governor

IMPHAL, Sept 24: The Senior Citizens of Sadar Hills today call on Governor Gurbachan Jagat drawing his attention to intervene in chalking out ways for upgradation of Sadar Hills into a full fledged district.

Five representatives of the Senior Citizens which included Tongkhothang Kipgen, president SAHILCA, Holkholet Khongsai ex-minister, Vomboi Hangshing retired IAS, SL Paokhosei ex-minister and C Doungel ex-minister, met the Governor of Manipur and submitted a memorandum reiterating the demand of upgradation of Sadar Hills to a full fledged district.

The memorandum has reflected the futile commitments and assurances given to the Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee by successive governments of Manipur since 1982 besides upholding the Manipur Hills Areas Autonomous District Councils Act passed by the Parliament even before Manipur achieved statehood.

The Senior Citizen further mentioned that the 40 years of demand for upgradation of Sadar Hills into a full fledged district is neither a demand for sovereignty, nor demand for statehood but for administrative convenient for the people living in the area as in the other five Manipur Hill Areas Autonomous District Councils.

It further held that the government’s denial of the demand for a full-fledged district on the pretext of district boundary re-organisation defeats the rationality of democracy in the country.

In the meantime, Tongkhothang Kipgen president SAHILCA, talking to media persons after the meeting disclosed that the Governor in his response has assured to consult the matter with the Chief Minister of Manipur.
