This programme was sponsored by NACO through Manipur AIDS Control Society and organised by the microbiology department of RIMS. Laboratory Technicians from eastern and north eastern states are participating in the training program.

Prof S. Sekharjit, director, RIMS who was the chief guest of the inaugural function said that the laborary technicians who are the unseen and silent workers are the most indispensable part of the system fighting the dreaded disease. He likened them to the air traffic controllers in the airports who despite being faceless and nameless are the ones ensuring air traffic safety round the clock.

He also said that the training was some sort of training of the trainers since the participants could train their colleagues once they return to their offices.

Prof Brajachand, head of the microbiology department, RIMS disclosed that the ART centre inside RIMS is one of such centres in the country. The centre is rendering a service in controlling this dreaded disease. There are 90,000 HIV positive patients registered with the ART centre in Manipur

Abhiram, deputy director of MACS said that though the population of Manipur represents 0.01% of the country`s population the percentage of the HIV positive persons in the state is 12.
