IMPHAL, Sept 18: The impact of the earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter Scale which hit Sikkim and other northern states could also be felt in the state this evening at 6:12 pm. However, there were no reports of casualties or damages in the state till late into the evening.

Surprisingly, no immediate information about the earthquake was available with any of the state agencies including Manipur University. The actual report of the earthquake came hours later after it was flashed on the internet.

A professor at the department of Earth Science, Manipur University told IFP that the epicenter of the earthquake lies at the border of Sikkim and Nepal which is more than 600 kilometers from the state. The state experienced lesser impact as it was far from the epicenter.

During the last earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter Scale which hit Myanmar and some other northern states including Manipur, the state experienced greater impact due to proximity of the epicenter which lies at a distance of about 80 kilometers on the Indo-Myanmar border, the professor added.
