IMPHAL, October 23: Bandh supporters of the three days total bandh imposed by All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM), today torched a mini truck of the 7 MR after pushing it down the gorge in the morning at Lukhumbi part 2, in Tamenglong district.

The incident comes barely a day after several Zeliangrong Naga civil bodies openly declared to fully support the total bandh yesterday at Noney bazaar.

The ANSAM imposed the bandh in all Nagas inhabited areas since midnight of October 21 against the failure of the government concerned to materialize the UNC demand of ‘Alternative Arrangement’.

According to information collected from various sources, the incident occurred around 10 am.

A convoy of a road opening party (ROP) comprising of MR, CRPF, commandos IRB was on routine patrol coming towards Imphal intending to clear the way for trucks stranded in between Awangkhul and Jiribam, informed the source.

On reaching Lukhumbi a mini truck among the convoy belonging to the 7th MR hit a Maruti car, bearing registration number MN01W-6753, parked their inviting a mob who forced the convoy to halt.

It has been further reported that the security personnel tried to disperse the mob but in the process ended provoking them, which further made the mob larger and subsequently outnumbered the security personnel.

The mob turned violent and pushed down the mini truck into a gorge of Ijei river and later set it on fire. In the meantime, the outnumbered security personnel took refuge at the 10 Assam Rifles camp nearby the area, further reported the source.

On receiving the report, the Superintendent of Police Tamenlong and concerned SDO rushed to the incident spot where a public hearing took place. With the intervention of the SP and administrative officials, the tension was neutralized, however.

The bandh supporters also reportedly claimed to have informed the SP of their stance against violation of the bandh, further asserted the sources.

On the other hand, several hundreds of trucks were reportedly left stranded and waiting for rescue in between Awangkhul to Jiribam. They are likely to be escorted back to Imphal on October 25.
