`Black Day` general strike paralyses normal life in state

IMPHAL, October 15: The 17-hour general strike called by the coordination committee of KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, UNLF and UPPK from today midnight till 5:30 pm has affected normal life in the state.

The day was observed as the “Black Day” by the coordination committee to protest against the signing of merger agreement between Manipur and India on October 15, 1949. 

All business establishments and educational institutions remained closed during the general strike. There was no transport service and attendance in government offices was thin.

Most private and government establishments in the state remain paralyzed due to the strike that began from the intervening midnight of Octber 14-15 and ended at 5:30 pm Saturday.

Stringent security measures were taken up by the state police department to prevent any unwanted incident during the general strike.

The strike ended peacefully. There was no with untoward incident.

Meanwhile, several people came out to protest against the signing of merger agreement in various parts of the state.

Copies of the merger agreement were also burned down by the protestors.
