Escaped KCP leader Sunil Meitei killed in operation by IW commando team

IMPHAL, October 11: The commander-in-chief of KCP (MTF), Sunil Meitei who escaped from the lockup of Porompat Police Station on the intervening night of October 3 and 4 was killed by Imphal west police commandos during an operation conducted at Yumnam Huidrom Awang Leikai at around 12:30 am today.

Addressing media persons today, Manipur DGP Y Joykumar stated that based on specific information, the Imphal west police commandos under the supervision of Dr AK Jhaljit, Additional SP (Ops) and under the operational command of Dr S Ibomcha, DSP/CDO and Inspector Y Kishorechand, OC/CDO raided the house of Longjam Shyam, 56, s/o Ibochou of Yumnam Huidrom Awang Leikai where the militant leader Sunil Meitei was taking shelter in an underground hideout inside the house.

At the spot verification, Ibochou revealed the location of Sunil Meitei and one constable opened the latch of the wooden plank of the underground bunk where he was hiding. He fired towards the police party with an automatic weapon and instantaneously the policemen retaliated and shot him dead in the underground bunk. One 9 mm pistol along with four live rounds was recovered from his possession, the DGP stated.

He further mentioned that the police have been conducting operations in various areas to nab Sunil Meitei after he escaped from the lockup of Porompat police station.

During the operations and from intelligence sources, the police came to know that he was taking shelter at Loktak Lake area and he had been moving from one place to another, he added.

Joykumar stated that yesterday at about midnight, the police received information that the wife of Sunil Meitei had left for the location of her husband in a hardtop Gypsy from Irengbam area. The vehicle was closely followed and it was found that she was dropped at Shamurou Bazar. She was later picked up by another hard top Gypsy and dropped at a house near Thiyam Leishangkhong. However, she escaped from the police taking the advantage of darkness.

The owner of the house, Longjam Shyam is a retired police constable and he is presently the secretary in-charge for home of KCP (MTF) Sunil Meitei faction, the DGP added.

Joykumar further maintained that the police wanted to apprehend him alive, but unfortunately he was killed in the operation. He regretted for the act saying no policeman wants to kill the criminals.

Later, a team of media persons visited the spot where Sunil Meitei was gunned down by Imphal west police commandos.

One family member of Longjam Shyam disclosed that Sunil Meitei was staying at their house since the night of October 9. He came in a bicycle and entered into the house forcefully. The underground bunk was also constructed by himself on that night.

The family member also stated that Shyam acquainted Sunil few years back but they had no clear idea about Sunil Meitei.

A team of police raided their house after the midnight. All family members were paraded at the courtyard and enquired about Sunil Meitei. They told the police that Sunil was not present in the house. However, some personnel rushed inside the house. They heard some gunshots and after that he was found dead inside the underground bunk.
