IMPHAL, Oct 29: Manipur Cycle Club (MCC) in its efforts to create a healthy, environment friendly and sustainable economy based development has been carrying out various activities since its inception on January 23, 2010, stated president Deben Sharma during a press conference today.
He stated that more than 450 persons including men and women have registered for membership to MCC in the Facebook and around 100 of them have been converted in actual membership through application processes. Membership increasing day to day is a sign that people want change from car and bike culture that has marginalized the poor, polluted the environment beyond a limit and made our economy badly dependent on external supplies. MCC is a popular movement across all economic strata in our society today. Critical Mass-VII will be October 30, he noted,
Deben also highlighted some of the initiatives of Manipur Cycle Club which included conducting Critical Mass – Manipur Chapter of a global movement for popularizing cycle in the city, submission of a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur to create safecycle space: lane and parking in the on going works for city development and town planning under JNURM.
We are appealing the state Govt to lend maximum support in popularizing cycle in the city by developing long term city transport policy in line with the national policy on Urban Development in the context of Global climate change environment, submission of proposal to the Commissioner, Art and Culture department, Govt of Manipur to declare Kangla a carbon free zone to preserve its cultural heritage and delicate vegetation inside the campus.
Besides these, Manipur Cycle Club in collaboration with the Environment and Ecology Wing is launching “Rent a Cycle” facilities on pilot basis for daily commuters to Imphal city. This is being started at the Keisampat junction, Deben noted.
