Newly appointed Mahila Congress secretary expresses willingness to compete in general election

IMPHAL, October 25: Poonam Raani Wangkhem has been appointed as the secretary of the All India Mahila Congress, making her the first person from the state to have ever earned an office at the All India Congress Committee (AICC), head office, New Delhi.

She was appointed for the post on October 7 by the AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and given independent in-charge of Assam and Sikkim for the period of two years from 2012-13.

Speaking to media persons in Imphal, Poonam expressed her desire to promote awareness among women of the various central programme and role of women in politics. She said “Even though Manipur has a woman oriented society, the women of the state are politically lacking behind” “The Nupilal, meira paibis, are some of few examples which have put the state on the world map”, she added

Under scoring the potential and courage of the women folk of the state, Poonam revealed her readiness to bring women folk into governance and politics especially the younger lot to bring change in the society.

While responding to queries on her future plan to come to main stream politics, Poonam disclosed that her whole political scenario depends on the willingness of the leaders.

She further expressed her willingness to contest in the ensuing 2012 general election of the state if the Congress senior leaders both central and state give her the green signal.
