IMPHAL, October 13: Many patients had to face inconveniences owing to the forceful closure of emergency services of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), which remained closed since last night over the issue of an alleged assault on a post graduate doctor.
The emergency service was forced to close down since yesterday around 11 pm by the PG doctors in protest against an assault on a fellow PG doctor on duty at the Children wards by a patient’s party alleging the PG doctor of negligence which led to the death of the one year old child.
However, the service later resumed this afternoon following an assurance given by the director of RIMS to fulfill their demands.
The PG doctors prior to the resumption of services submitted a memorandum to the director with a charter of demands asking additional security measures in various departments of the institute to prevent unwanted incidents against doctors and staffs. It also demanded the authority concerned to book the individuals involved in the assault of the PG doctor.
At the same time, the students also warned to resort to launching an indefinite cease work strike in case of failure on the part of the authority concerned to meet its demands before October 21.
As a mark of protest the PG students also staged a sit in protest at the campus of the RIMS.
It may be stated that a group of patient’s party assaulted a PG doctor on duty at the children’s ward over the death of a one year old child who was admitted into the hospital on October 6 and was suffering from Leukemia.
The patient’s party revealed that the child had to be frequently administered with blood after every few months gap.
The victim’s family also revealed that the child’s condition became critical yesterday following which they informed the doctors to conduct an immediate checkup on the child.
They alleged that the doctor did not give swift response and only intervene as the condition of the child worsened. The doctor took blood sample but the child died even before the blood sample was examined.
In the meantime, the child’s father clarified that the incident was unintentional and that he was overwhelmed by emotions on losing his child at such a tender age.
On the other hand, the RIMS authority was reluctant to give any comments on the matter.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the heads of departments of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences chaired by the director Prof S. Sekharjit, condemned the assault of the doctor on duty last night, informed a statement issued by the media advisor RIMS.
It further informed that a complaint would also be lodged with the police station in this connection.
In protest against the assault of the doctor the post graduate students staged a sit-in at the RIMS campus today. The meeting also decided to urge the post graduate students to resume duty shortly after the sit-in. Meanwhile the RIMS authority has taken care so as not to disrupt patient care facilities by opening the Out Patient Department and Casualty services, further informed the release.
