SHDDC blockade smashes longest record today

IMPHAL, Oct 8: The ongoing economic blockade of the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) is going to smash the existing record of the longest economic blockade in the state currently held by the United Naga Council (UNC) tomorrow.

The present SHDDC economic blockade at 68 days today has tied with the 2010 UNC economic blockade (from April 11 till June 18) in opposition to the election of the Autonomous District Council (ADC).

In 2005, All Naga Students Association Manipur, ANSAM had imposed a 52 days economic blockade along the national highways starting from June 18 and ending on August 11 against the declaration of June 18 as ‘Integrity Day’ by the state government.

However all records will be smashed tomorrow by the SHDDC blockade and create a new record with the SHDDC adamant not to give up with its agitation until their demand for a separate Sadar Hills district is fulfilled.

The SHDDC blockade which has been imposed since August 1 has so far claimed four lives which included three protestors (as claimed by the SHDDC) and a truck driver. Several vehicles and government offices have been set ablaze during the blockade.

Countering the SHDDC blockade the UNC also imposed a counter economic blockade since August 21 which is 47 days old.
