Youth handed over to police for allegedly threatening RTI activists

IMPHAL, October 21: General public of Khergao area apprehended a youth and handed him over to the police for allegedly threatening RTI activists last night at Khergao Awang Leikai.

Briefing media persons Md. Ibungo a local club member, revealed that the incident occurred around 8 pm when MA Rahman, an RTI activist was threaten with dire consequences by the accused youth identified as Md. Amarbir s/o of Bacho of Khergao Keikhu Awang Leikai, along with two of his accomplice, while Rahman was returning home.

A heated argument exchanged between Rahman and the trio, which alerted the local populace. On learning about the threats they caught Amarbir while the other two managed to escape from the scene, said Ibungo.

Amarbir was later handed over to the police concerned the same night, he said.   

The trio also asked Rahman to withdraw his application seeking information with regards NRGES and IAY, and schemes implemented under the funding 12th finance commission of India and state Finance commission, in the Khergao Part-II Gram Panchayat, he said. Earlier the same trio had threatened two more RTI activists identified as BM. Sherali and Md. Syed Ningthou of the same locality over the phone, Ibungo said.

Ibungo alleged that some of the implementing agencies of the said schemes also approached the RTI activists and tried to bribe him persuading him to withdraw his application.

Decrying the incident, the Iris Crescent Welfare Club along with the local meira paibis, today staged a sit in protest at Khergao Awang Leikai ground today.
