7th public hearing on district re-organization held

IMPHAL, November 15: The 7th public hearing on district re-organization was held today at the office chamber of state chief secretary DS Poonia at Old Secretariat Complex, Imphal.

Altogether four organizations, namely Kuki Chiefs’ Association, Tamenglong district, Liangmei Naga Council, Senapati Zone, Movement for Tribal People’s Rights, Manipur and Eastern Tamei Area Chiefs’ Association were invited to give their statement before the reorganization committee. However, only Liangmei Naga Council and Eastern Tamei Area Chiefs’ Association turned up for the public hearing.

Speaking to media persons after the hearing, secretary of Liangmei Naga Council, M Panam stated that the state government should abide by the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Naga people and the Indian government in 1972. The land of Naga people should not be affected by the creation of new districts in the state, he enjoined.

On the other hand, Eastern Tamei Area Chiefs’ Association endorsed the demand for the creation of full-fledged Sadar Hills district and further demanded the authorities concerned to relocate the five villages, namely Thenjang, Lasan, N Thenjang, S Songpibung and Sojamphai of Tamenglong district to Tujang Vaichong sub-division of proposed Sadar Hills district.
