Court directs police to investigate kidnap and rape of minor girl

IMPHAL, November 4: The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West has today directed the officer-in-charge of Mayang Imphal police station to investigate the kidnap and rape of one minor girl from Jiribam.

Addressing media persons today at the office of Human Rights Law Network, Manipur, advocate Rakesh Meihoubam stated that the mother of the victim, Huirem ongbi Nganbi, w/o Romon of Jiribam has filed an application to CJIM, Imphal West under section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 against Thoudam Sanjit, 34, s/o Th Manihar of Uchiwa.

Concerning the gravity of the allegations against the respondent, the magistrate has directed the police to investigate the matter and submit the status report within 10 days of the commencement of the investigation.

Rakesh further stated that the victim was allegedly abducted by the respondent Sanjit on February 8, 2011 from Jiribam and raped at different places. The victim was compelled to live with him in a domestic relationship in the nature of marriage.

Sanjit had then taken her to Guwahati and stayed there for sometime until they returned to his home at Uchiwa in Imphal west on March 21, 2011.

The respondent is already a married man with three children. The victim was treated with cruelty at his home in such a manner that she cannot reasonably be expected to live with him.

Meanwhile, the victim’s parents came to know about her whereabouts after they lodged a complaint with Manipur State Commission for Women.

The Commission further directed Sanjit and his family members to produce the victim on October 24, but she was found to be pregnant. Later, on October 31, she gave birth to a son at RIMS Hospital.
