Festival of hope, justice and peace kicks off

IMPHAL, November 2: The 3rd festival of hope, justice and peace to commemorate the completion of 11th year of Irom Chanu Sharmila’s struggle for the repeal of AFSPA, 1958 kicked off today at MDU Hall, Yaiskul, Imphal.

The festival is being organized by Just Peace Foundation from November 2 to 6.

The inaugural function was attended by Prof Lokendro Arambam and managing trustee of Just Peace Foundation, Kh Nandi as the chief guest and president respectively.

Speaking at the inaugural function, brother of Irom Sharmila, Irom Shingajit stated that the government should give attention to the voice of the common people.

The demand made by Anna Hazare has been fulfilled by the Central government following few days of fast, but the demand for Sharmila who has been on fast for more than 10 years has been sidelined by the government, he asserted.

Shinghajit appealed to all to join hands in strengthening the movement for the total repeal of AFSPA from the soil of the state.

A solo dance was also performed by Nongmeikapam Surjit besides the performance by Pranab Mukherjee and team entitled “Soaked, Submerged and Subdued”.

On the second day of the festival, a patriotic recitation competition will be organized by Khunnai Kanba Numit Thousillup at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul.

On the third day, there will be screening of films on AFSPA and Sharmila at Mayum Network, Kwakeithel.

On the fourth day, a mass hunger strike will be organized at THAU Ground, DM College Gate, Imphal and different cities across the country.

On the fifth day, a painting competition will be held at Manipur Dramatic Union. A mime play titled “Mirel Masingkha” will also be shown by Rapporteur Theatre on the last day.
