Government for healthy society says Chief Minister while inaugurating 22nd NEOGSCON

IMPHAL November 5: The 22nd North-East Obstetric & Gynaecological Societies` Convention (NEOGSCON), 2011 organised by the Northeastern Obstetric & Gynaecological Society, Manipur was today inaugurated by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi at the premises of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister stated that profession of medicine is not only a noble occupation but also a very demanding one, especially the subject of gynaecology poses many challenges. More than a profession it`s rather a sacrifice of 365 days a year, he added.

Asserting that people come with an expectation of joy and happiness about their about to be born child, the Chief Minister urged the gynaecologists should do their utmost to fulfill this expectation. Ample amount of input in the form of material and manpower has been given to JNIMS, but it is still insufficient, and added that there is a lot of room for improvement in the quality service as well.

The Chief Minister informed that in Manipur there are seven district hospitals, two medical colleges and other health centres. He said that his government lays emphasis on availability of good health care at the door step, and added that in the last decade tremendous input to grass root institution like ASHAS has been provided. Facilities like Endocrinology and Endoscopic surgery have been provided too, he said.

Stating that the young medical students are the future health care providers of the country, the Chief Minister appealed to the faculty members of the North-East Medical Institutes to look after them. He also said that the central government is very keen to improve the health care system of the North-East. He stressed on the need to improve health infrastructure and teaching institutes and also work with a clear vision to protect people from preventable disease,

Congratulating the Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society, Manipur for organizing the Convention, the Chief Minister expressed his hope that it will immensely benefit the academic environment of budding doctors of JNIMS in particular and others in general.

The Chief Minister noted the role of Dr. John Berry White in the health care history of the North-East India. Dr. John Berry White started the first medical school of North-East India at Dibrugarh which was later converted into Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. The Regional Medical College in Manipur now Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was established in 1872 with the help of retired Professors from Assam, he added.

Senior Obstetric & Gynaecologists Dr. Kh. Jatishore Singh and Dr. N. Kheroda Devi were honoured on the occasion with a shawl and a scroll of citation each for their commendable services rendered to the state of Manipur.

Over 350 delegates from different states of the North-East participated in the two-day Convention.

Chairman of Imphal Obstetric & Gynaecological Society, Manipur Dr. N. Jitendra Singh; Director, JNIMS Dr. Leishangthem Chandramani Singh and Secretary, Imphal Obstetric & Gynaecological Society, Manipur Dr. Indrakumar graced the inaugural function as president and guests of hounor respectively.
