Health vital for development of society: Governor

IMPHAL, Nov 12: The Governor of Manipur Gurbachan Jagat inaugurated the 16th North Eastern Diabetes Conference this evening at Jubilee Hall, RIMS Lamphel.

This is the third time that the conference has been held in the state.

Speaking at inauguration, the Governor said “Health is an essential pre-requisite for development of all aspects of the human life”.

He further stated that health is an essential part of normal living.

“All social and economic activities of a country are closely related to the standards of the people’s health. For many centuries, we have looked upon the relief and sickness and sufferings as a sacred obligation of the state and the people. When the science of medicine has rapidly advanced today, there is still a great deal to be done in medicare and health-care system for mankind. Many diseases have been prevented, controlled or cured, yet many more have emerged. In view of this, updating and upgrading of knowledge and skills of medical professionals need to be emphasized”, he asserted.

Further the Governor stated that the main objective of the conference is to seek measures to prevent diabetes mellitus by propagating more and more scientific information and creating awareness regarding change of life style causing obesity and diabetes. 

“I am glad to learn that the North Eastern Diabetes Society, with its headquarter at Guwahati, was establishing in 1995, covering all the Northeastern states. Its annual conferences have been held in different places. It is hopefully that the outcome of the conference will go a long way in achieving the aims and objectives of the society” he further informed.

He further said as all are aware that the global burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus for 2010 would be 282 million people which are projected to increase to 438 million in 2030, a 65% increase.

The impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus may be considered as a lifelong disease. It increases morbidity and mortality and decreases the quality of life. At the same time, the disease and its complications cause a heavy economic burden for the diabetic patients themselves, their families and society. A better understanding about the cause of predisposition of Indians to get type 2 diabetes mellitus is necessary or future planning of healthcare, policy and delivery in order to ensure that burdens of the disease are addressed, he added.

The conference was also attended by NE Diabetes Society president Th Dhiren and health services director S Ibomcha as president and guest of honour respectively.
