ICHAM calls for negotiation between government and agitating bodies

IMPHAL November 6: On the outset of the notified NH 37 total bandh called by Jiribam District Demand Committee beginning November 10, the Information Centre For Hill Areas, Manipur (ICHAM) has drawn the attention of the government to address the imminent issue.

A release by N Rajendro, ICHAM president has stated that,an understanding was reached between the SHDDC and the government and the ninety day economic blockade was called off. Even as the public has breathed some relief, the issue of the Jiribam district status needs to be considered in all seriousness to prevent unwanted hardships.

It said that the stance of imposing economic blockades and strikes should be abandoned and the demands should be negotiated in a democratic manner. It has also appealed to the UNC to reconsider their stance of a counter blockade on boundary issues, as the government has given a timeframe of three months to chalk out the proper boundaries by the District Reorganization Committee. It would be in the best interest of the public if the UNC negotiates with the government and settle the issues, it said.

Conclusively, it has added that the civil organizations which played a pivotal role in addressing the Sadar Hills issue should also give similar efforts to the Jiribam district demand and the matter of the UNC, as prolonged blockade affects the citizens the most.
