SHDDC warns resumption of agitation if demand not fulfilled

IMPHAL, Nov 3: The Sadar Hills Districthood Demand (SHDDC), has warned to resume its suspended economic blockade if both the central and state government failed to materialized the written assurance on the MoU signed between the committee with the state government.

A memorandum addressed to the Union home minister P. Chidambaram, has mentioned “The 40-years old demand for Complete Implementation of Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Act, 1971 in respect of Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council has been suspended following a MoU signed between the government of Manipur and SHDDC on October 31, 2011, and after due consideration of your appeals to withdraw the economic blockade imposed by SHDDC with the assurance to urge the government of Manipur to act in time”.

The government of Manipur has agreed to inaugurate at the ‘earliest’ the Sadar Hills Autonomous District as per Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Act, 1971. The assurance ‘earliest’ is meant to indicate time before the election code of conduct is effective for the forth-coming General Election to Manipur Legislative Assembly, it informed.

At the same time, the SHDDC further asserted that the Maharaja (Titular King) of Manipur has also written to the President of India with a copy each forwarded to the Union home minister and the Governor of Manipur on the constitutionality and genuineness of the demand with a request for immediate implementation of the said Act in Sadar Hills.

The SHDDC have full faith in the home minister’s assurance to urge the government of Manipur to address the constitutional and long cherished demand of the people of Sadar Hills, it said.

Meanwhile, it warned that in the event of failure on the part of the Union government and government of Manipur to translate the ‘assurance’ and ‘MoU’ into action as faithfully intended, it informed to ‘revoke’ the suspended agitations in the form of economic blockade, general strike, etc. to continue unceasing stress to the government for our ultimate goal.
