UNC, ANSAM react with stern agitations to govt and SHDDC MoU on Sadar Hills

IMPHAL, November 1(Newmai News Network): Reacting strongly to the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the state government of Manipur and the Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) late last night for the creation of Sadar Hills district by bifurcating Senapati district, the United Naga Council (UNC) and the All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) have taken a decision today to resort to stern forms of agitation. The two Naga organisations urged the Nagas to be prepared for any eventuality.

Even as the economic blockade sponsored by the UNC is going on since August 21 against the creation of the Sadar Hills district, a 72-hour bandh in Naga areas has been announced today which will start from the midnight of November 3.

This decision was taken during the emergency meeting of the United Naga Council and the frontal organizations held on November 1 took serious note of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the government of  Manipur and the SHDDC.

“The meeting deplored the manner in which the government of Manipur had executed the agreement without a consensus and consent of the Nagas, notwithstanding the four MoUs signed with the Naga people and the sustained public protest against the manner in which the government of Manipur has been handling the issue. The action of the government of Manipur is highly condemnable and is a divisive scheme to incite communal conflicts and is in total violation of the understanding already reached with the Naga people,” the UNC and ANSAM said in a joint statement today.

The unmandated Naga district councillors and the Naga representatives are a party to this great sell out of the rights of the people and will be answerable to the Naga people.

“In view of the above, it has been decided to enforce total bandh for three days w.e.f midnight of November 3, 2011 to midnight of November 6. This total bandh will cover all government offices, educational institutions, movement of all type of private and commercial vehicles including the construction work of the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal railway line and the BRTF manning highways in the Naga areas. It has also been decided that the ongoing economic blockade will continue until further notice,” the UNC and ANSAM added.

Any individual, organisation or department that violates this total bandh will be responsible for any untoward incident, they warned. Further the UNC and ANSAM have directed all constituent units and frontal organizations for effective enforcement in their respective jurisdiction.

“The Naga public and all Naga organization are hereby informed to be prepared for any eventuality and continued democratic protest activities for protection of our land,” the Naga bodies alerted.

  1. Well, the Government is toothless as always and on the other hand, Nagas and SHDDC are stubborn and hell bent on their demands as if the end of the entire world. Meiteis never want to take initiative and stick to the very old orthodox “ei shoktraga loire”.

  2. My opinion: I think the govt. is a little bit irresponsible. The govt should call an open discussion with the delegations from both groups, viz the Kukis and the Nagas along with the so called Meiteis, and try to outline the best one. It should also be noted that one should make at least some compromise, or else, thousands and thousands of discussions will remain unfruitful. Being stubborn will arrive to nothing.
