Poll coordinating committee distributes election responsibilities to state govt depts

IMPHAL, December 28: The first meeting of the newly constituted state coordination committee to monitor the January 28 Assembly election was held at the Manipur Secretariat South Block, chaired by its chairman state chief secretary.

The meeting further deliberated the different state department heads on the respective responsibilities of their concern departments during the election process.

According to an official source, the addl chief secretary will act as the member secretary of the newly constituted coordination committee.

The meeting was also attended by DGP, Manipur; chief engineers PWD, PHED and IFCD; principal secretaries of finance, GAD, health and family welfare, higher education and commissioners of food and consumers affairs, transport, IPR, tourism, printing and stationaries and all directors of concerned departments and the general manager BSNL, Manipur as members. Official representatives of AR, Army, CRPF, BSF also attended the meeting, the source informed.

Further according to the source, the chief secretary in his opening address during the meeting urged the concerned departments to fully act out their respective responsibilities to ensure the successful holding of the 10th Manipur Assembly election.

The meeting also finalized the respective responsibilities of the concerned state departments, the source informed.

The meeting further decided to instruct the SoO signatory militants and other groups in peace talks with the government not to interfere in the election process, the source informed. The meeting further decided that the home department should report any disturbances from the said groups should be reported directly to the commission.

Meanwhile, considering the difficulties in regard to transportation and communication in the far flung areas of the state, the chief secretary and the BSNL general manager further held a special meeting after the end of the first meeting.

During the brief meeting, the chief secretary deliberated to the BSNL general manager on the difficulties of reaching the interior parts of the state and further urge him to provide all possible help in this regard, the source added.

Further in his reply, the general manager further urged the chief secretary to point out the locations where there is no availability of telecommunication facilities so that the BSNL can work out a system to avail temporary telecommunication during the election process.
