Seminar on gender and conflict situation held

IMPHAL, December 16: The department of Political Science, Nambol L. Sanoi College, Nambol and the department of Political Science, M.B. College, Imphal have organized a One day seminar on “Gender and Conflict Situation” today at Imphal Hotel, North AOC, Imphal.

Prof. Arambam Lokendra, former director, AVRC, Manipur University, Canchipur, Dr. Th. Manihar Singh, Principal, M.B. College, Imphal and Karam Monoranjan Singh, Department of English, M.B. College, Imphal graced the occasion as chief guest, president and guest of honour, respectively.

The first session was chaired by Prof. Arambam Lokendra, and read out a paper of Ashild Kolas, PRIO, Norway, who could not attend the seminar, titled “Gender and Conflict Situation in South Asia”.

Dr. Homen Thangjam, M.B. College presented a paper on “Defining Conflict Situation in Northeast India” and Dr. G. Amarjit Sharma, N.L.S. College, spoke on “Everyday Life in Conflict Situation”.

The second session was chaired by Irengbam Arun, former editor Ireibak.

N. Edina of EEVPHAM spoke on “Plight of the widows in Manipur” and Kh. Anandi, Just Peace Foundation, spoke on Irom Sharmila and AFSPA. Dr. Ch. Sheelaramani, Reader, D.M. College of Arts, spoke on “Challenges faced by women of Manipur in Conflict Situation”.

The third session was chaired by Nandini Thokchom, FIPA. Thangjam Shanta of Khurai spoke on “Homosexuality & Gay Rights in Conflict situation” and Sreema Ningombam, NLS College, reflected on Homosexuality & Gay Rights and patriarchal institutions of the Manipuri society.

The last session of the seminar was chaired by Dr. R.K. Indira Devi, reader, MB. College, Imphal. Nandini Thokchom, FIPA presented a slide show on “Conflict situation and construction of gender order” and Ranjeeta Sadhokpam, Human Rights Alerts, shared her personal experiences of being a woman activist.

Special guest of the seminar Salam Bidyalaxmi, Mahidol University, Bangkok, who provided observatory remarks on the proceedings of the seminar.

During the course of the seminar a token of love was extended to EEVPHAM. Soroma Devi, vice principal of Nambol Sanoi College, Nambol presented a donation of Rs. 1000 (one thousand).
