ULFA warns of targeting outsiders in Assam

GUWAHATI, Dec 8 (agencies): The hardliner ULFA today warned of targeting outsiders settled in the state retaliation of `atrocities’ on local people, particularly in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.

In an emailed statement, ULFA’s ‘assistant publicity secretary’ Arunudoy Dohotia said, “The ULFA condemns the atrocities being committed on Assamese populace in Tinsukia district by the `Indian colonial forces` latest deployed wing `Cobra Commando`.

He claimed that the ‘atrocities’ being committed under the provisions of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act will aggravate the situation in the state as evident in the latest spate of events in Tinsukia.

“The burnt of these atrocities on Assamese people by the colonial Indian forces will have to be felt by the Indians living here,“ the email added.

Tinsukia district, located at the eastern fringe of the state and a known ULFA stronghold, has witnessed a recent series of violence, including kidnappings and extortions.

A small tea grower was abducted from the district two days ago, for which the police has blamed the ULFA though the outfit has denied its involvement.

Last night in a separate incident, eight people were injured when unidentified miscreants attacked them with sharp weapons.

The attackers, who were carrying sophisticated weapons, said they were ULFA cadres, though the security agencies are verifying the claim.

The ULFA has a history of targeting Hindi-speaking communities in the state, terming them as ‘outsiders’.

The hardliner faction, led by its military chief Paresh Barua, has already warned of targeting security agencies and politicians.
