Non-Congress alliance confident of forming next government

The common minimum programme of the People’s Democratic Front, the pre-poll alliance of non Congress parties, being released by the PDF leaders today at its temporary office located in the campus of MPP.
IMPHAL, Jan 18: The opposition Peoples’ Democratic Front (PDF), made up of the MPP, NCP, CPM and JD (U), has asserted while releasing its common minimum programme that it will be in a position to claim the next government after results of the January 28 polls are announced.

The alliance is hopeful of garnering a minimum od 29 seats of its own just short of claiming the majority in the 60-member assembly with the added luxury of calling up support from the BJP and CPI with whom the MPP and NCP have already arrived at separate understanding.

National general secretary of NCP, PA Sangma declared that the party expects to win at at least 15 of the 22 constituencies where it has put up its candidates. On the other hand, MPP president, Dr Nimachand Luwang asserted that his party will be victorious in ten seats with plus or minus of two seats. JD (U) expects four of its five candidates to cross the winning posts, says its state party president M Tombi.

Without specifying, the common minimum programme has promised to focus on withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers’ Act and provide full security to all the people residing in the state.

Another pertinent subject of concern die the people of the state, namely the protection of the national highways, found prominence in the list. The alliance has assured disturbance free commutation in inter-state routes through the setting up of a highway protection force. If the PDF comes into power, the Imphal Jiribam national highway will be restructured for its conversion into a perennially serviceable road. Further, the revival of the old Cachar Road or Tongjeimaril will be attempted with the hopes of getting riddance of extortions and reducing the impact of blockades along the main highways. Construction of all-weather tunnels from Imphal to Assam and Imphal to Myanmar have been promised for the accomplishment of the same.

The programme has promised better recognition and facilities for sportspersons and individuals with achievement of distinction in the fields of arts and culture.

Referring to measure for the upliftment of economic condition of the state, the front pledges effective implementation of a state industrial policy with special plans for revival of sick industries both in public and private sectors. Further, it includes plans for conversion of Loktak Lake into a full-fledged fish industry, introduction of Manipur Urban Employment Generation Scheme, development of Moreh as a Special Economic Zone, and extablishment of agro and forest based industries in a private-public partnership mode.

On its public welfare agendas, the PDF has promised that resolution of the power crisis in Manipur through total take-over of the Loktak Power Project from NHPC, connectivity of all district and sub-divisional head quarter by roads, ropes and air, empowering the state human right commission, actuation of rights to education and food and upgradation of state health care centers and their modernization found mention. 

The PDF also announced that tourism will be its pet project and will aimed at attracting foreign tourist.
