Series of grenade attacks and arsons committed on Congress offices, MLA; Cor Com claims hand in attacks

IMPHAL, January 4: While a grenade exploded late last night at the residence of the Wangjing Tentha MLA Moirangthem Hemanta and another unexploded Chinese hand grenade was found from his residence this morning, miscreants burned down the Congress office at Kwakeithel late last night.

On the other hand, unidentified persons lobbed another grenade at a private residence at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai this evening which also houses a newly set up Congress office.

The Cor Com in a statement made available to the AMWJU, has claimed responsibility for the said attacks.

According to a source, late last night at around 10:30pm, unidentified persons suspected to be militants hurled a hand grenade at the residence of Wangjing Tentha MLA M Hemanta at Tentha Khunou. The bomb exploded however there were no reports of any human casualties.

Meanwhile, family members of the MLA found another unexploded hand grenade this early morning.

The concerned police later safely removed the grenade from the MLA’s residence.

Speaking to media persons on the issue, family members stated that the motive behind the two grenade attacks cannot be ascertained.

In another incident, unidentified miscreants burned down the Congress office at Kwakeithel late last night. The main portions of the Congress office have been destroyed by the fire.

In yet another incident, miscreants lobbed a hand grenade at the residence of Sagolsem Tombi of Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai.

According to a source, an office of the Congress party was set up yesterday at the private residence.

The source further informed that Tombi on being told that certain underground outfits had imposed ban on the Congress party had taken down the hoardings which were displayed at his gate.

The miscreants believed to be riding a Honda Karizma threw the hand grenade before making good their escape.

Though no one was hurt during the explosion, Tombi’s Santro car was damaged by splinters.

Meanwhile, in a statement made available with the AMWJU, the umbrella body of various state based militant groups, Cor Com has claimed responsibility for the recent spate of attacks including today’s grenade attack at the Singjamei office of the Congress, yesterday’s burning down of the Congress office at Kwakeithel, January 2 grenade attack at Keishampat Thokchom Leikai.

The Cor Com has also claimed responsibility for the attack at MLA M Hemanta’s residence yesterday and the grenade attack on MLA Jayenta of Keishamthong a/c on December 31, 2011.
