Supporters of left out candidates create havoc at Trinamool Congress office

IMPHAL, January 10: The office of the Trinamool Congress, Manipur state unit located at Sega Road, Imphal has been vandalised by supporters of three aspirant candidates who failed to get their names approved by the party for the upcoming 10th Manipur legislative assembly election slated for January 28.

At about 11am today, supporters and workers of three aspirant candidates stormed the office of the party and removed the sign boards and hoardings of the party erected at the office premise.

Workers of aspirant candidates from Thongju, Wangoi and Langthabal assembly constituencies vandalised the Trinamool Congress office. They also raised slogans like ‘Go back Trinamool Congress’ ‘We want justice’, ‘To uproot Trinamool Congress from the soil of Manipur’.

Although the reason behind the act was not immediately known, it was later established that the controversy surrounding the issuance of tickets was main reason behind the vandalizing act.

During the attack, sign boards of the party erected at the office were shattered and torn apart. The alleged supporters of political candidates also resorted to burning party flags and banners outside the office premise.

Speaking to media persons, supporter of an aspirant candidate of the party said the state unit of the party had initially given assurance to the candidates for party tickets to contest the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly election.

However, the party observer sent by the central leadership failed to announce names of candidates and hence today’s incident happened.

Supporter of another candidate also said that they are against the central observer’s motive to change names of candidates who have already been announced by the state unit of the party.

He also said all the aspirant candidates of the party had already initiated election campaign in the name of the party and alteration of candidate names will create chaos and confusion apart from demoralising the party.
