`NSCN-IM, ZUF collaborating to thwart Congress`

IMPHAL, Feb 6: MPCC president Gaikhangam has stated that the NPF and MSCP candidates of Nungba assembly constituency are openly supported by the cadres of NSCN-IM and Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) respectively.

The state Congress chief made this statement while clarifying the charges of poll violations leveled against him by the polling agents of NPF and MSCP candidates of Nungba constituency.

Speaking to media persons this afternoon at Congress Bhavan, Gaikhangam stated that the charges of poll violations were totally baseless. He said that he was not at all present at the polling station and even he could not cast his own vote.

The re-poll took place in the stronghold of Congress and as a result the NPF and MSCP supporters were trying to sabotage the polls, Gaikhangam stated.

He said that the NPF and MSCP candidates of Nungba assembly constituency could be jailed for their nexus with the underground outfits.

The ZUF cadres had threatened the villagers to cast their votes in favour of the MSCP candidate. The Congress supporters of Nungba have been facing threats and intimidations from the militants. There have been many poll-related casualities in Nungba constituency, MPCC president averred.

Replying to a query raised by the IFP reporter on the number of seats that will be won by the Congress, Gaikhangam expressed his confidence of securing absolute majority in the state assembly.

He said that the Congress will clinch maximum number of seats from both valley and hill districts that will be enough in the formation of the next government.
