Protestors relax Moreh general strike; resolve to continue with other forms of agitation

IMPHAL, March 3: The indefinite general strike imposed in the border town Moreh and along the National Highway 39 has been relaxed momentarily considering the general public. The general strike had been imposed in the border town and the National Highway 39 by various meira paibi organizations of the area in protest against the arrest of five individuals by a team of the 9 Assam Rifles posted at Moreh Thursday night at around 10pm and the subsequent handing over of two of the five alongwith arms as militants to the Imphal police.

The protesting bodies have claimed the two individuals to be innocent labours.

The rally was jointly organized by Kha Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup Moreh, Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lamjing Lup Moreh, Muslim Women Development Association, Minority Women Development Society Moreh and Moreh Labour Union.

The rally started from Ima Kondong larembi campus and after passing through NH 39 Ima keithel, UBI, post office , custom Moreh, Moreh police station, primary health Center Moreh, Dalpati gate no 1, Hill Tribal Council Moreh, Moreh Fire Service, Gate no 2 ward no 5 Meitei leikai and Pangal basti, Chawangphai, Chingdong leikai, Kanan Veng Moreh Hospital and ended at the Ima Kondong lairembi campus.

A public meeting was also held at the end of the rally.

The rally was attended by more than a thousand protestors holding placards which read “Repeal AFSPA we want justice”, ”Respect democracy of the Nation”, “Punish the Human right violators”, “bring justice,Respect the rights of the labour” etc.

During the public meeting it was also resolved to demand the release of the two arrested individuals and to relax the general strike imposed since Thursday morning.

The public meeting further resolved not to co-operate with the 9th Assam Rifles, to submit memorandum to the Manipur Governor, IGAR (S) and other concerned authorities regarding the arrest of ordinary public and to remain against the arrest of ordinary public.

It may be reminded that an indefinite general strike had been imposed since 10am Thursday by various local meira paibi bodies of Moreh town against the arrest of five individuals by a team of the 9 Assam Rifles posted at Moreh Thursday night at around 10pm and the subsequent handing over of two of the five alongwith arms as militants to the Imphal police.

The two arrested individuals alleged to be militants have been identified as Oinam Bisorjit Meetei, 24, son of O Rajen of Moreh ward no7 and Biren Singh of Nambol Phoijing and presently staying at Moreh Khunou.
