2 legal aid clinics inaugurated

IMPHAL, April 6: Supreme Court judge and executive chairman of National Legal Services Authority, Justice Altamas Kabir on Friday formally opened two legal aid clinics at Malom and Uripok Cheirap Court complex.

The inaugural ceremonies organized by Manipur State Legal Services Authority were also attended by Supreme Court judge, Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice and patron-in-chief of Manipur State Legal Services Authority, Justice AK Goel and Chief Justice, of Andhra Pradesh High Court, Madan B Lokur.

Justice Altamas said, most people specially in urban areas of Manipur do not have access to legal help because of lack of knowledge and legal awareness owing to which they are facing various difficulties to get justice.

In urban areas, many girl students are voiceless over sexual harassment, difficulties in admission to schools even as awkward situations like not getting beds in hospitals are being faced by women, Altamas added.

He also emphasized on the need of mass legal awareness campaign among the poor people who cannot afford to fight in law court and urged the people to avail the benefits provided by legal aid clinics.

With the setting up of two legal aid clinics in Manipur, now the volunteers of the clinics will spread knowledge on legal proceedings from door to door.

Many of the states in India have already established legal aid clinics.

Meanwhile, according to a realiable source, the visiting Justice before inaugurating the functioning of the High Court tomorror will interct with village chieftains, NGOs and government officials and will also attend a workshop on role of legal services authorities in access to justice and juvenile justice.

The workshop will be held at MFDC from 10am to 11:45am.

Further according to the source, the visiting justice after inaugurating the functioning of the High Court from 12/12:30 to 1pm, will further take a local sight seeing tour at Sadu Chiru water fall and at Loktak lake.

He will leave Imphal at 5pm for Delhi by a Air India flight, the source added.
