UKHRUL, April 4: A team of the Hunphun Executive Council, HEC and United Hunphun Phungcham Youth Front, UHPYF led by HEC chairman Edmund Chiphang and Law and Order Secretary Kol Kasar, treasurer Khayui Raleng and the President of UHPYF were left shocked during a surprise visit of the Ukhrul Pettigrew college by the functioning of the college. The team further lambasted the government for the negligence of the only government established college in Ukhrul district since 1972.

During the visit, which included members of the apex body of civil organizations and the Ukhrul District Journalist Association also met with several representatives of the college including the collge vice principal and student body members.

During the visit, the team was told by the college vice president Soreishang Kasar that the college with altogether 364 students has only 13 regular lecturers, 12 part-timers and 10 guest lecturers.

The career of the 364 students in the college seems a “bleak future” as a matter of fact, due to the main factor which is irregularity of the lecturers in attending classes though the students in the institution are keen to learn and be punctual, according to the Principal and the General Secretary of Pettigrew College Students` Union Khanso Nekhede.

The students indeed do not attend the classes regularly because of not wanting to spend Rs 40-50 per day for taxi fares as they know they will be attending classes without lecturers.

It is interesting to note that the most affected victim students are those of science stream who have to appear their exams without even conducting a single practical class during the whole semester. The science laboratory equipments are in fact damaged or is unusable and the college has no water facilities or pipe connection.
