Storm wreaks havoc, houses destroyed

IMPHAL, April 16: A powerful storm wreaks havoc at various parts of the state on Sunday night, uprooting hundreds of houses, trees and electric posts in its wake.

The powerful storm hit the state at around 11:30pm last night.

Strong winds accompanied by rain uprooted trees and cut off electric wires and blew off many rooftops in its wake in both the hills and the valley districts of the state.

Major damages were however reported mainly from Imphal east, west and Bishnupur districts of the state.

In Imphal east district, garage roof of the office building of the district SP and the CI sheets roof of MT office of Porompat police station were blown off during the Sunday’s storm.

The sentry post and vehicle shed at the district Deputy Commissioner Office complex were also destroyed by the storm.

The fitful gusts of wind caused widespread destruction in Mayang Imphal of Imphal west, the worse affected area.

Ward member of Phabakchao Sekmaijin Gram Panchayat, Jeinulabuddin accompanied by leaders of the area visited the areas hit by the storm this morning and rendered help to the affected families.

In the area, 50 out of 250 houses were damaged and were extensively destroyed by the wind. The roofs of a Madrasa School and a house at Phabakchao Mayai Leikai and Phabakchao Khokmakhong were completely blown off.

Ward member Jeinulabuddin told the media that the affected area was under the Loktak Project and that this area had been extensively destroyed by another heavy storm in 2010.

He has further appealed the state government to provide assistance to the affected families.

In Laphupat Tera, 250 houses were damaged due to the storm and some domesticated animals and poultry including hens, ducks and goats were killed.

Two offices of a Baptist church located at Longmai Noney part II and three residences of the area were also completely damaged during Sunday’s storm.

Electric supply to the area remained cut off today.

Meanwhile, electric supply, phone connections remained cut for most parts of Monday in the state due to the storm affecting the normal proceedings of ATMs, banks, water supplies and others in the state.

Kaimuanthang adds: The Thangching designated camps of the KNF (MC) cadres were blown away last night by a storm associated with a strong wind.

When the roofs of the houses which are segmented into about 17 rooms were blown off, the cadres and others were taken by surprised.

An estimated Rs 32 lakh worth property have been reduced to nothing said the sources.
