IMPHAL, April 24: A fresh controversy emerged on Tuesday over the death of Khonthoujam Renubala, a newly married woman who was allegedly committed suicide at her husband’s house at Konthoujam Awang Leikai under Patsoi police station on April 21.

According to the statement given by her husband, Kh Dineshwor to the police, Renubala suffered mental illness and jumped into the pond and drowned herself.

However, her maternal family denied the statement of Dineshwor, saying the entire version was not true and totally impossible, and they suspect foul play rather than suicide.

This was stated by Renubala’s sister Pebam Sanahanbi while talking to the media outside Patsoi police station where members of the JAC formed against the alleged killing along with hundreds of people from her locality stormed and demanded to hand over the body.

Sources said both the family claimed her body which led to the incident where a crowd stormed the police station. The body of Renubala is now lying at RIMS mortuary.

The angry crowd also demanded the police to award befitting punishment to the accused Dineshwor.

Reports said Dineshwor and his father was manhandled by the irate locals after dragging out from their house during which Patsoi Officer-in-charge, Inspector, Dinesh suffered minor injury to control the skirmish. The accused is now in the custody of Patsoi police.
