Govt to pay ex-gratia

IMPHAL, May 19: The last rites of Pushpa Basnet was held on Saturday following the assurance of the state Chief Minister to pay ex-gratia to the next of kin and to initiate probe into the controversial death under the supervision of not lower than a SDPO rank officer.

Meanwhile, the JAC has also suspended its stir for three days after the local MLA and the state government assured that its demands would be fulfilled within three days, sources said.

However, the JAC warned of further agitations in case the assurance given by the government fails to implement within the stipulated time. The road blockade enforced on NH-39 was relaxed from 7 am.

The body of Pushpa had already been taken by the family and JAC yesterday, but brought back to RIMS morgue in the late evening the same day following a disagreement within the JAC and family, sources said.

A procession was taken out in the Kanglatongbi area before the last rites of late Pushpa was held. The participants observed silence on the roadsides to honour the soul of the 16-year-old girl.

Pushpa Basnet, daughter of Prithiman Basnet, a native of Tispari Nepali Basti under Sekmai police station, found death at a foothill in Leikinthabi on May 17. Her boyfriend named Khumanthem Ingo, 24, son of Apabi, a resident of Maharabi Maning Leikai is now accused of killing the girl who was a student of standard eleven at Presidency College, Motbung.

Meanwhile, the Women Action for Development in a press statement has condemnded the alleged murder of Puspa Basnet on May 17.

It has stated that it is very unfortunate that Manipur has become a killing field where girls and women are seriously threatened to survive.
