Social Welfare clarifies on rice quality

IMHAL, May 28: Social Welfare director G Satyabati clarified that the quality of rice provided by the department to the Anganwadi centers of the state is without complaint.

In a press interaction at her office today, the director stated that the case of Laingam Khul Anganwadi centre of Lamshang, where rice meant for children was found adulterated is an extraordinary case. “I have never seen such quality of rice before, there are stones, plastic pieces as if the rice was swept with a broomstick and later packed”, she said.

Mentioning that the department will never compromise on due rights of the children , she stated that the rice has been provided to the centers  directly from the FCI storage, Sangaiporou. The rice is lifted by the transporters and delivered to the particular Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) office. Afterwards,with the supervisors and helpers, the rice is brought to the Anganwadi centers.

She stated that among the 625 Anganwadi centers located at Lamshang, the singular complaint was found only at Laingam Khul centre.

“We are fully investigating into the matter and will not spare any effort to bring out the facts to the public”, the director added that regarding the case, the rice was unloaded at the CDPO office at Lamshang but the worker namely one Roma did not personally transport the rice, a friend deliver her quota.

As the matter is under investigation, to determine the quality of rice distributed, a media team led by deputy director of the department,L Shyama Devi and SNP officer V Ningthingla carried out random checking in some Anganwadi centres this afternoon. At two locations of Tera Pukhrambam Leirak and Nepra Menjor Pukhri Mapal, rice bags were opened in front of the team and the quality was not found to be questionable.
