World Migratory Bird Day observed

IMPHAL, May 13: The World Migratory Bird Day 2012 was observed on May 12 and 13 at Ningthoukhong and Phubala, Bishnupur district under the theme “Migratory birds and people-together through time”.

The program was organized by Environment and Human Development, Manipur (EHUD) in association with Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN) and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Manipur Chapter, with the support of Ecology and Environment Wing, Government of Manipur.

A release of the organizing committee said that the program started with a rally by students along the Ningthoukhong canal and proceeding towards Mangolnganbi College where awareness cum lecture program was conducted.

Speaking on the occasion as resource person, RK Birjit Singh, wildlife activist, spoke about the importance of radio trekking and ringing of birds in identifying the routes of the migratory birds. He cited the recent trekking and ringing of birds in identifying the routes of these birds that came to Manipur.

Dr RK Ranjan Singh, convenor, INTACH, Manipur chapter, elaborated the need for observing migratory bird day and why this day is being observed. The bond between human and migratory birds, the benefit from its migration and the decreasing number of birds that arrived at the lake due to habitat destruction of the birds and the increasing number of human encroachment.

Later on, a trip was made at Phubala, where the students gets a firsthand knowledge on how to watch birds, how their numbers are being counted and how to identify the birds, it added.
