Subedar Niranjan remembered

IMPHAL, June 8: The 122nd death anniversary of Subedar Niranjan Chhetri, a freedom fighter of the state was held today at Kanglatombi.

Sekmai MLA Kh Devendra, Retd colonel RS Jassal, All Manipur Gurkha Welfare Union president RB Chappagin was the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

The day was organized jointly by the All Manipur Gurkha Welfare Union, All Manipur Gurkha Vidyarthi Parishad, Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Manipur and the Bhartiya Gurkha Manipur State Unit.

Speaking at the observation RB Chappagin said, Niranjan Chhetri was a freedom fighter of the state during the Anglo-Manipur war.

He was deputed as a Subedar to Bir Tikendrajit and was hanged by the British army on June 8, 1891 at the western gate of Kangla while defending the sovereignty of Manipur, he continued.

Further lamenting the state government for its failure to acknowledge the sacrifice of the freedom fighter, he said that it is high time that the government should build a memorial in the name of the forgotten hero.

He urged the Sekmai MLA to help in the construction of a memorial in the name of the forgotten hero so that the valour and heroic deeds of a freedom fighter is not forgotten for generations to come.

MLA Kh Devendra assured all possible help to construct a memorial in the name of the forgotten hero.

He continued that he will take the proposal to the Chief Minister and urge the state to take up the construction of the memorial at the earliest.
