India at London Olympics: Third day actions roundup

On the third day of competitions at the London Olympics today, India will feature in the following events.

In Badminton, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, who is among the hot favourite for a podium finish, will meet Belgian Lianne Tan in a group match of the Women’s Singles section. In Women’s Doubles, the duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will take on the pair of WH Cheng and YC Chien of Chinese Taipei.

In Boxing, Sumit Sangwan will today look to follow the footsteps of Vijender Kumar and Jai Bhagwan, who have advanced to the pre-quarterfinals in their respective divisions. Sangwan will lock horns with Yamaguchi Falcao Florentino of Brazil in the 81 kilogram category.

In Shooting, Beijing Gold medalist Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang will begin their campaign, competing in the Men’s 10 metre Air Rifle event.

In Tennis, India’s Men’s Doubles opening round matches, which were postponed due to rain, will take place today. The duo of Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan will take on the pair of Robin Hasse and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands; while the combination of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna will clash with the Belarusian tandem of Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury.

In the Men’s Singles section, Vishnu Vardhan will play his opening round match against Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia. Vardhan had made it to the Singles draw after a German player withdrew due to a hamstring injury.

The Indian Archers Laishram Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari would try to make amends in the individual events today, after their dismal show in the team competitions.

The Indian Men’s Hockey Team will return to the Olympic arena today after failing to qualify for the Beijing Games. They take on the Netherlands in their opening Group-B match.
