Man dies after severe beating

IMPHAL, July 11: A man died after he was beaten up severely on charge of theft by some youths at the agricultural farm of Smart Society located at between New Salem and Ngarouchingjen Thumkhong under Lamlai Police Station yesterday.

The deceased person is identified as Khaidem Subol, aged 50, son of (late) Babu of Nongdam Maning Leikai. He worked as an agriculturalist.

Yesterday, Subol went to the residence of Kshetrimayum Ibotomba at Nongpok Heirok Ngarouchingjen about three kilometres north of Nongdam Village. He along with Ibotomba and one Sarat had drinks together at Ibotomba`™s place.

After that Subol again drank with Romi Tangkhul, aged 22, son of Hendri Tangkhul and Chahong Ningboi, aged 22, son of Ch Sangei both from New Salem at Ibotomba`™s place.

The trio then proceeded towards the farm of Smart Society where they again drank with two other persons Wungsim, aged 31, son of (late) Luwin and Baner, aged 27, son of MC Ashang from New Salem.

Romi and Chahong began to beat up Subol on charge of stealing vegetables from the village. However, they were intervened by Subol`™s brother Raghumani and another person Nilachandra from the same locality.

Subol reached home at around 4 pm yesterday. His health worsened today morning after he began to vomit blood. He died at his home this morning before he could be taken to hospital. The family members were about to perform the final rites, but they stopped the ritual after they were informed about the incident.

The family members then reported the incident to Lamlai Police Station. The villagers of Nongdam went to New Salem and brought the accused Romi and Chahong to Nongdam for interrogation. Later, the accused persons were handed over to police.

The dead body has been deposited at JNIMS Mortuary for post-mortem. The villagers are prepared to launch stern agitation after getting the post-mortem report. The villagers said that Subol was an alcoholic but he was not involved in any theft case.
