IMPHAL, July 6: Manipur people walks farthest to fetch drinking water. The state also tops in the number of radio listeners.
This was stated by Director of Census Operations Manipur Y Thamkishore Singh today at a Data dissemination workshop on Housing, Household amenities and Assets, Census 2011.
Delivering the keynote address at the one-day workshop Director Thamkishore said, out of the 2582 villages in Manipur only 23 are Census Towns and 28 are Statutory Towns.
A census town has a minimum population of 5000 with a density of 400 persons per sq km or 1000 persons per sq mile, of which 75 percent is engaged in non-agriculture activities.
Thamkishore said, Imphal West and Imphal East districts has the highest number of census towns while Thoubal, Bishnupur, Chandel and Churachandpur district has no census town. Tamenglong, Senapati and Ukhrul District has one census town each.
Director Thamkishore further said, according to the Census data Manipur tops in the distance from household to source of drinking water in the country. On the other hand, Manipur has the highest number of radios listeners.
The one day Census workshop was held at Hotel Imphal.
Prof I Tomba Singh of MU Mathematics Department presented a paper on ‘Census House, predominant material of floor, wall and roof of Census houses and their uses, household and status of SC/ST’ in the pre-lunch session, while Dr Kh Kumarchand of MU Statistics Department presented a paper on ‘Amenities available to the household and assets possessed by the household’.
