IMPHAL, July 28: The paddy fields in the state still could not get enough water for cultivation even if the monsoon rainfall causes flash floods in most parts of Imphal. The rainfall at the catchment areas is negligible and as a result the water level of major rivers of the state is very low.

According to information received from the Control Room of Irrigation and Flood Control Department, heavy rainfall was recorded only in Imphal and its adjoining areas. The Rainfall Reading Gauge installed at Kangpokpi, Saikul and Litan recorded no rainfall till 6.30 pm yesterday. However in this morning, 7 mm, 9 mm and 13.40 mm of rainfall was recorded at Kangpokpi, Saikul and Litan respectively.

Later in the evening, only 6 mm of rainfall was recorded at Kangpokpi and Saikul while 1 mm at Litan.

The water level of major rivers is still very low. The water level is unlikely to rise unless the catchment areas receive 30-40 mm of rainfall for about five consecutive days.

As on 6 pm this evening, the rainfall recorded at the Rainfall Reading Gauge installed at Raj Bhavan and Lamphelpat was 47 mm and 49.30 mm respectively. The reading would be taken again in the next morning.

The IFCD officials are constantly measuring the water level of Imphal River at Minuthong, Lilong River at Lilong, Thoubal River at Thoubal and Nambul River at Hump Bridge. The water level of Nambul River was recorded at 781.625 mm while water level of Iril River was recorded at 780.575 mm on 11 am and later increased to 780.675 mm in the evening.
