Oil stations closed down following arson

IMPHAL, July 10: Oil stations in the valley districts of the state have remained closed today following arson at two filling stations in Imphal area last night. The oil stations are also running out of stock due to the national highway blockade.

Suspected KCP militants set fire at the oil nozzle of Ibochou Service Station located at Kakwa Asem Leikai at around 11 pm yesterday. The fire was put out by the locals.

KCP has served a demand note of Rs. 10 lakh to the owner of Ibochou Service Station, Leishangthem Ibochou, 56, son of Ibomcha of Singjamei Chingmathak.

Decrying the arson at the oil station, Kakwa Ashem Leikai Nupi Lup staged a sit-in-protest today. The women folks of Ashem Leikai, Sorokhaibam Leikai and Waikhom Leikai took part in the protest.

Speaking to media persons, Ashem Leikai Nupi Lup secretary Y Bino stated that the act of causing arson at an oil station within the locality is condemnable as it could have been disastrous if the fire was not extinguished timely. She also demanded the organization involved to make a clarification on the incident.

The oil nozzles at Imo Filling Station located at Singjamei Thokchom Leikai were also set fire at 11.30 pm yesterday shortly after the arson at Ibochou Service Station.

KCP (MTF) reportedly served a demand note of Rs. 10 lakh to the owner of Imo Filling Station and threatened to close the station on July 2. Both Imo Filling and Ibochou Station have been closed down since July 6.

Meanwhile, Youth Welfare Association staged a sit-in-protest condemning the arson at Imo Filling Station.

It may be recalled that a hand grenade was lobbed at the residence of the owner of Thoubal NRL Station, Yengkhom Joykumar of Kakching Yengkhom.

The oil stations in the valley districts of the state were closed today because of the act of arson and shortage of petroleum products in the state.
