Quiet remembrance of July 23 incident at Lamshang

IMPHAL, July 23: The third Death Anniversary of July 23 Khwairamband Keithel incident Thokchom Rabina and Chungkham Sanjit was held today at the Lamshang Community hall, Lamshang.

The anniversary was attended by Apunba Lup Coordinators Phulindro Konsam, Ayekpam Langdon Leima, and Sunil Karam; Poirei Leimarol President L Memchoubi, AMKIL President Ph Sakhi, Kanglamei President Y Lairik Leima, retd Superintendent, YAS Chirom Nabadwip and Social Worker Th Iboyaima as presidium members.

The anniversary programme started with the lighting of the inaugural lamp by Th Iboyaima and offering of floral tributes before the victims by family members and the general public.

People pay floral tribute to Chungkham Sanjit and Thokchom Rabina who were killed in Khwairamband firing incident of July 23, 2009.

Speaking at the function, United Committee Manipur, president Nabachandra said that in the past the general public was subjected to severe police brutality and the public used erupt every now and the cases were all hushed up in those days.

However, during the July 23 firing incident, the authorities were unable to hush up the fake encounter after Tehelka publicised it, he said.

The Tehelka Report was followed by a huge public outcry over fake encounters in the state, and the authorities had to kneel before the public for once, he said.

The case was later handed over to the CBI and 11 police personnel including two Inspectors were suspended.

Meanwhile, the proceeding of the case under the CBI is unsatisfactory to the general public. He continued high ranking officers are not included in the investigation of the case.

He further claimed that some of the 11 suspended police personnel have already been called back to work.

He concluded his speech with a call for unity amongst the several organizations present in the state to work together for the development of the state.

Meanwhile, All Manipur United Club Organization, president KT Rahman while lamenting the statement of the state Chief Minister inside the state Assembly that there is no other way than to shoot and kill the militants; urged the general public to unitedly oppose the NCTC from the state.

He further urged the general public of the state to work in a united manner for peace and development in the state.

The function was also attended by representatives of AMSU, MSF, IPSA among others.
