Manipur Cabinet announces Rs 75 lakh for Mary Kom

Manipur, IMPHAL, August 14: The state government has announced an enhanced cash award of Rs 75 lakh to London Olympics bronze medallist and ace state pugilist Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom and her promotion to the post of SP.

According to a statement of the state Chief Minister’s secretariat, the state government has also decided to award the three other Olympians, L Devedro, L Bombayla and Ng Soniya Chanu with Rs 20 lakh each.

The statement continued that a special meeting of the state cabinet convened today to exclusively discuss the special incentives for the State Olympians took several decisions to this effect.

In partial modification of the August 8 cabinet decision, the cabinet approved enhanced cash award of Rs 75 (seventy five) lakh to MC Mary Kom.

It said, Youth Affairs & Sports Dept should take immediate steps to sanction the amount to MC Mary Kom.

“Planning Dept will allocate additional Plan fund for this purpose.”

The cabinet further approved the promotion and appointment of MC Mary Kom to the post of Superintendent of Police to be designated as “SP (Sports)” in Manipur Police by creating one post of SP Sports outside MPS/IPS cadre and in exemption from consultation with MPSC.

Cabinet has already approved the allotment of 0.8355 hectare covered by CS Dag no 159 of 91- Meitei Langol village on a token premium of Rs 100 only for the `Mary Kom Boxing Academy`.

“The Revenue Dept shall issue necessary allotment order at the earliest. It also decided to recommend to NEC for setting up Mary Kom NE Regional Boxing Academy at Imphal.”

The statement also said that a decision was further taken to provide Cash Reward of Rs 20 lakh each to the following three sportspersons of the state who partictpated in London Olympics namely, L Debendra (Boxing), L Bombayla Devi (Archery), Ng Soniya (Weightlifting).

The state cabinet has also approved for providing suitable` Government employment to them commensurate with their qualifications, the statement said.
